Closure of the Holy Church of the Sepulchre in Jerusalem

Thank you for contacting me about the closure of the Holy Church of the Sepulchre in Jerusalem after a dispute over tax and a proposed land expropriation law.

I have been assured by Ministers that the British Embassy is following the consequences of the decision to close the Church of the Holy Sepulchre closely. It is very welcome news that the church has now reopened after three days of closure.

I understand that the Government of Israel has reaffirmed its commitment to freedom of religion, announced the suspension of tax collection and created a group to reach a solution to the issue of municipal taxes. The UK Government is hopeful that this team can work constructively with all parties to achieve a solution. It is also important that all Church bank accounts are unfrozen by the Municipality.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.
