Fixed Odds Betting Terminals

Thank you for contacting me about Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (FOBTs) and gambling advertising.

I understand the concerns around FOBTs and I want to see a responsible gambling industry which protects players appropriately.

In 2016 the Government launched a review into gaming machines and social responsibility. I know that Ministers recognise that further action is necessary to strike the right balance between enabling people to bet responsibly and ensuring consumers and communities are protected.

In the light of this, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport consulted on regulatory changes to the maximum stake on FOBTs, looking at options between £2 and £50 to reduce the potential for large losses. I am confident that this action will help to reduce the harmful impact of gambling on the player, their families, and the wider community. The consultation closed on 23 January and the Government is now considering the feedback received.

In addition, I am encouraged that the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has announced new measures to ensure stronger protections around online gambling and the Gambling Commission will consult on changes to the licence conditions and Codes of Practice in 2018. Alongside this, a new industry-led responsible gambling advertising campaign will also be launched to help protect those at risk of problem gambling as well as children and young people.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.
