General Practice

Thank you for contacting me with regards to General Practice.

Investment is key to ensure the NHS has the resources it needs and the Conservative Party have pledged to increase NHS spending by a minimum of £8 billion in real terms over the next five years, delivering an increase in real funding per head of the population for every year of the parliament. With regards to General Practice in particular, you will be pleased to learn that there is a drive to have 5,000 more GPs by 2020 and an extra £2.4bn a year will be ploughed into services by 2020.

Many of our highly respected medical staff come from overseas.  They have well established rights but in addition to this the Government has made absolutely clear its desire to give complete security to all EU nationals living here at the earliest possible opportunity we are striving to deliver at a very early stage of the Brexit discussions an agreement that covers both EU nationals living here and UK nationals living in the EU.

Too many good students who are desperate to study medicine are turned away and I believe that this has to change; the WHO says that there is a global shortage of over 2 million doctors. As the fifth largest economy in the world, we should be training all the doctors that we need. You be will be pleased to learn that from September 2018, we will train up to 1,500 more doctors every year, increasing the number of medical school places by up to a quarter. This is the biggest annual increase in medical student training in the history of the NHS.

Thank you once again for taking the time to contact me.
