I am very aware of concerns regarding potholes and road conditions locally. I share these concerns and I know from my conversations with West Sussex County Council (WSCC) that recent extreme swings in temperature have caused significant issues. Notwithstanding this I asked West Sussex County Council (WSCC) for reassurance on how they are monitoring their contractors to ensure that they are getting value for money and that repairs being made are long lasting and appropriate.
The Government has provided over £3 million of specific support to WSCC to deal with potholes and I want to know this funding is being spent well and swiftly.
Although I am pleased that the vast majority of repairs made to potholes were conducted within 15.5 days, I have reverted back to WSCC to request details of how many of these potholes were revisited for repairs within the same year and how many ‘contractual defect notices’ were issued.
Notwithstanding the sheer scale of our local road network and the swings in climatic conditions we are now witnessing we clearly must ensure we remain on top of road maintenance, I have received too many complaints regarding damage to vehicles and the issues have been all too apparent to us all.
