The Warnham Nature Reserve was created as a space for Horsham residents to enjoy in 1988 and receives thousands of visitors every year. The 92 acre site is home to 400 species of plants, around 100 bird species and more than 21 species of dragonfly. Hides, nature trails and boardwalks enable visitors to watch the Heronry and the many birds that make use of the Mill Pond: including a magnificent Kingfisher which makes regular appearances. The Ancient Greeks believed that the first two kingfishers were banished Gods – you can understand why!
The Reserve also offers a variety of programmes for both adults and children from learning how to distinguish different species to practical conservation. I had the pleasure of visiting the Reserve and experiencing one of these programmes earlier this summer. Children were enjoying pond dipping, crafts and “minibeast” hunts. A great way to introduce them to Natural History.
I was back at the Reserve this Sunday for a celebration. Horsham Lions, the Friends of Warnham Local Nature Reserve and Horsham District Council have joined forces to create a fantastic new Bird Hide on the edge of the Mill Pond.
Lions International celebrate their 100th Anniversary this year and the Horsham branch (itself celebrating 55 years) wanted to put something permanent into the community to mark this Anniversary. This was alongside their regular fund raising activities raising via Christmas collection, sponsored swims and events which contribute thousands of pounds for local good causes including the Chestnut Tree House.
The idea came from Aston Trelford – who was both a Horsham Lion and an active volunteer at the Nature Reserve. Helping to fund the project appealed to the Lions as a permanent facility could be used by local people of all ages throughout the year. They had the enthusiastic support of the Friends of the Nature Reserve and HDC.
Sadly Aston died earlier this year but it was very fitting that his wife Jenny opened the Hide this weekend – which is named after her late husband. It’s a great addition to the Nature Reserve and another good reason to visit.
