Persecuted Christians- Red Wednesday Campaign

Thank you for contacting me about persecuted Christians.

I am pleased that the Red Wednesday campaign, which recognises all those who have been persecuted or killed for their religious beliefs, is being recognised by Parliament. For the second year running, Mr Speaker and the Lord Speaker have given their permission to light up the Palace to show support for this important initiative.

I also understand your concern for Christian communities around the world. Where freedom of religion or belief is under attack, other fundamental freedoms often face threat as well. The Government is deeply concerned for religious communities in the Middle East. Ministers have stressed the importance of guaranteeing religious freedom when working with the Lebanese Government and the new Government in Iraq. Additionally, the Government is prioritising reaching the most vulnerable people across Syria, including Christians and those who have suffered from the ongoing violence, with its extensive aid programme.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.
