Road and Cycle Safety

Thank you for contacting me about road and cycle safety.

I welcome the news that vital action is being taken to stop the anguish and misery caused by the actions of dangerous drivers. Life sentences are being introduced for those who cause death by dangerous driving, and for careless drivers who kill while under the influence of drink or drugs, while a new offence of causing serious injury through careless driving is to be created. This is one part of Government action aimed at making roads safer for everyone.

These tougher sentences come after an overwhelming response to a consultation, which revealed substantial backing for the plans from a wide range of people including victims, bereaved families and road safety experts. The maximum penalty for causing death by dangerous driving and causing death by careless driving while under the influence of drink or drugs will both be increased from 14 years to life.

As you are also aware, the Department for Transport has recently launched a call for evidence on ways to make walking and cycling safer. This consultation closes in June and all responses and suggestions will be analysed and Ministers will then determine the next steps.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.
