US Immigration Policy at the Border with Mexico

Thank you for contacting me about US immigration policy at the border with Mexico.

I appreciate the strength of feeling on this issue. I absolutely agree with the Prime Minister when she said in the House of Commons, clearly, wholly and unequivocally, that the policy was wrong.

I am pleased to say that this is not the United Kingdom's approach. In fact, when Theresa May was Home Secretary she ended the routine detention of families with children.

It is my understanding, thankfully, that President Trump has now signed an executive order to end the practice of separation.

It remains the case that the UK has a special, long-standing and enduring relationship with the United States. President Trump's forthcoming visit will be an opportunity to discuss a range of issues and shared interests, and where the UK disagrees with what the US is doing, the Prime Minister has been clear, we will say so.

Thank you again for contacting me.
