Thank you for contacting me about the deteriorating situation in Venezuela.
I am deeply concerned for the people of Venezuela. The Venezualan Governmnet is acting in an autocratic and undemocratic manner it has eroded human rights and imprisoned thousands. Hundreds have also died during protests against President Maduro's actions.
It is absolutely imperative that human rights, the rule of law, the separation of powers and the integrity of democratic institutions are respected, and I am glad that our Foreign Secretary has made that clear.
This situation is evolving fast and one of the first items on Parliament’s agenda on its return is the political situation in Venezuela – it is due for debate on Tuesday 5 September in Westminster Hall.
