Acid Attacks

Thank you for contacting me about acid attacks.

I am very concerned about the use of acid and other corrosives in violent attacks, which often leave victims with terrible life changing injuries and trauma. There is no place in society for these sickening attacks and I want to see government working with all the appropriate agencies to tackle this problem and prevent further victims.

The Government's approach to tackling the use of acid and other corrosive substances in violent attacks is centred on four key strands. First, working closely with the police to ensure that the policing response is effective. Second, ensuring that the current legislation is used effectively and that sentencing guidelines reflect the severity of these offences. Third, working with retailers to see how they can restrict access to the most harmful products and understand the current requirements under the Poisons Act 1972. Finally, making sure that victims of these attacks are at the heart of our response.

There must be appropriate support available to victims, from the initial medical response to giving evidence in court and beyond, and victims must feel confident in coming forward to report these crimes, giving evidence, so that perpetrators of these horrific crimes are brought to justice.

The Home Office and the National Police Chiefs' Council jointly hosted a meeting in July with medical experts, police, retailers, and officials from a number of Government departments and agencies to share understanding about the nature of attacks and discussed action being taken by the respective agencies. I can also tell you that the Government is currently considering with retailers what action can be taken to restrict access to the most harmful products used in acid and other corrosive substance attacks.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.
