By the time the County Times arrives this week most who intend to vote in the local elections will have done so. I am clearly very partial and have enjoyed being on the doorsteps campaigning over the last few weeks - I hope that there is a good turnout. Decisions made at a local level really matter and those who are prepared to put themselves up for elected office deserve our support in undertaking a difficult but very necessary role.
I believe our national democracy is strengthened by being a Constitutional Monarchy, a tradition so deeply rooted in our history. Many of the elements of the Coronation can be traced directly to King Edgar’s crowning in 973AD. William the Conqueror’s coronation on Christmas Day 1066 was the first to take place in Westminster Abbey.
Unlike 1953 when only 1 in 20 owned a TV, most will be watching events at home - but for those who prefer the Big Screen experience The Capitol Theatre will be showing coverage live!
I know many residents will be marking the event with street parties, picnics and services of celebration. HDC are laying on a huge celebration in the town on Sunday.
After the Coronation I will be sending a card to the King and Queen wishing them the very best. I would very much like the card to be designed by a local, young artist. More information about my Coronation card competition can be found here: https://www.jeremyquin.com/news/jeremy-quins-coronation-card-competition it would be lovely to see young people taking part in the competition at street parties!
I know many will also come together on Monday 8th May as part of the Big Help Out. Horsham Scouts are already pledged to help as are many local charities.
The Coronation will be a moment in which the eyes of the world will be upon us. An extraordinary number of Heads of State will be present in London with billions in the Commonwealth and around the world watching every minute. I believe King Charles will prove a truly exceptional monarch and the weekend will be a chance for us all to celebrate a huge moment in our national life.
