Happily, the conditions in which reptiles are kept in homes in this country (almost all of which are born in the UK) has massively improved over the years. The work to understand how to achieve this and establish the right regulations is an effort. It relies on experts in the field putting work in to ensure all animals have the “Five Freedoms”.
It was a privilege to visit one such team working in Sussex who are at the forefront of research behind ensuring these extraordinary creatures receive the standard of care they deserve and is appropriate. No one should have a pet of any sort without investing in the appropriate equipment to ensure their welfare.
Despite my initial scepticism (fear would be perhaps more accurate) I was persuaded to meet at close quarters a corn snake and (much easier) other reptiles - an amazing experience!
