I met the team from Sussex Partnership and the CCG to discuss their current consultation, especially in relation to the provision of hospital care to patients living with very advanced dementia who need support. I recognised the importance of having centres of excellence where the comparatively small number of patients needing this support get the very best specialist care and support in modern, well equipped facilities.
More resources are coming in to the service and I support both the investment and appreciate that centres of excellence help recruitment and retention, making the best possible care easier and enhancing research.
While I support this focus, as it provides the best support for patients, I am very keen that the needs of family members and the emotional support of patients is not neglected.
I was therefore pleased to hear the recognition of the need to support transport options to help ensure that patients treated further away from home continue to be easily accessible for visits during their hospital stay.
