Boris Johnson Elected Leader of the Conservative Party

The Conservative Party announced today that Boris Johnson has been elected as Leader of the Party, having secured the endorsement of nearly 2/3 of all votes cast.

This follows an extremely encouraging campaign in which both Boris and Jeremy Hunt focussed with real optimism on the future of our country and what can be achieved.

I am delighted to welcome Boris’ election.

In a speech yesterday Boris said he took on the task with energy and humility.  No one should underestimate the scale of the challenge especially in the context of a “hung” Parliament – but nor should anyone underestimate his determination and resolve.  It is a time for the country to unite and, with confidence, look to the future.
