I am regularly contacted by constituents who are keen to see a weekly local food waste collection, as am I.
I recently met Horsham District Council as part of my regular meetings with the team and discussed this topic and I know that Mid Sussex District Council are currently trialling a food waste collection.
I recognise that introducing a separate food waste collection will be expensive for our local councils. As such, I wrote to the Minister responsible asking for support for our local councils to make a collection possible. I am pleased that the Minister has confirmed to me that the Government will ensure that local authorities are resourced to meet any new burdens arising from the implementation of food waste collections, including up front transition costs and ongoing operational costs.
The Government will be bringing forward £295 million of capital funding which will allow all local authorities in England to prepare to implement free weekly separate food waste collections for all households from 2025. Time is required for Councils to prepare for the change – which is significant for local collections but I am delighted this is now being implemented.
